Steinberg’s RND Portico 5033 EQ-

At a recent session of Saint Louis’ Club Cubase, I got to see the new RND plugins in action. There are two plugins in the RND series, the 5033 EQ and the 5043 compressor. They are both good. The EQ is stunning. Jaw dropping stunning. I want to do my best to stay away from over used marketing terms but this baby was clear, smooth and impressive. What stuck out the most right away were the high frequencies. They were very smooth, noticible but they did not get harsh or biting. Lot’s of high end boost did not tear my ears apart. You know, the sound of “air” when things just open up and sound clean and clear? This was better than that. The mids were smooth, everything was distinguishable…..but not noticeable. Low were obviously tight and punchy….what else would I say?
They ran fairly light on the cpu, enough that we could load a mix with the compressor and EQ on every channel.
Yamaha used their VCM technology that not only models the sound of the hardware, but actually models each component of the circuitry. Yamaha worked closely with Mr. Neve to get the plugins to match the sound of his analog processors. I think they nailed it. This is by far the best sounding EQ that I have personally heard, and it’s the first to be endorsed by Rupert Neve himself.
They are not cheap plugins, but they are well worth the money spent for a professional studio or freelance mix engineer. Steinberg does offer a 30 day trial.
